Morocco’s imperial cities are steeped in history and represent the country’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. These cities have all served as capitals at different times under various Moroccan dynasties. Here’s a list of the four imperial cities:
Fes (Fez)
Fes is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, founded in the 8th century by Idris I. It is often referred to as the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. Fes is home to the world’s oldest university, Al-Qarawiyyin, and its famous medina (Fes el-Bali) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its medieval architecture, bustling souks, and ancient mosques.
Marrakech
Founded in 1070 by the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakech is known as the “Red City” due to its distinct red sandstone buildings. The city is famed for its vibrant Jemaa el-Fnaa square, stunning palaces, lush gardens, and the imposing Koutoubia Mosque. It was an imperial capital under various dynasties and remains a major tourist destination.
